Benavente

Benavente, Sara’s hometown, is located in the heart of the Castilla y León region of northern Spain. Its austere scenery has been the stage for fascinating historical events. For example, the ninth legion of the Imperial Roman army – “Legio IX Hispana” or 9th Spanish Legion -- was based in this region around the time of Christ, before moving to Britain and infamously disappearing from history. Centuries later, it was from these lands that the “Catholic Monarchs” Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, launched the reunification of Spain in the late 1400s/early 1500s, and decided to support Christopher Columbus’s expedition that resulted in the discovery of the American continent. The area has been through many ups and downs, including an invasion by Napoleon’s forces, but remains a very proud area of Spain.

Overall, Benavente is a conveniently located spot from which to visit historical and beautiful destinations. We have selected some below that you may wish to investigate, together with restaurant options, that we hope you will enjoy during your visit if your schedule permits. But do give us a shout if you want some other tip or if you need help with plans.

Most importantly, Benavente is where we call home in Spain, and we are so very happy to welcome you!

This is a real hidden gem. In the middle of nowhere there is a couple that runs a mushroom restaurant. We have very fond memories coming here on the weekends and you can try tens of different mushrooms cooked in very unexpected ways.
